Tamil Nadu’s Ambitious EV Manufacturing Goals Forge Ahead with Over 40% Contribution to India’s EV Sales”

In a remarkable turn of events, Tamil Nadu, often referred to as the “Detroit of India,” has solidified its position as a powerhouse in the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing sector. Recent data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Guidance Tamil Nadu reveals that out of the 1 million EVs sold in India this year, a staggering 4,10,000 units, which is over 40%, were manufactured within the state.

Leading the charge is Ola Electric, with 1,75,608 units produced at its Krishnagiri manufacturing plant. Not far behind, TVS Motor has contributed significantly with 1,12,949 units from its Krishnagiri facility.

This success is aligned with the state’s ambitious vision to dominate the EV market further. By 2030, Tamil Nadu aims to produce 30% of all electric vehicles sold in India, significantly boosting its share in global exports.

Tamil Nadu’s government has played a pivotal role in this achievement by rolling out the EV Policy in 2023, which encompasses various aspects of the EV ecosystem, including battery manufacturing and charging infrastructure. To catalyze growth, six cities—Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Salem, and Chennai—have been designated as EV hubs, leveraging the state’s existing strengths, such as a highly skilled workforce, a robust network of suppliers, and a thriving auto manufacturing ecosystem.

Investments of approximately ₹50,000 crore are expected to flow into EV manufacturing by 2025, fostering the creation of 1.5 lakh jobs. Tamil Nadu’s rapid ascent in the EV sector not only solidifies its reputation as an industrial leader but also positions it as a key player in the green mobility revolution.
