Tata AutoComp Systems developing high-voltage EV components for global markets

Indian Tier-1 supplier Tata AutoComp Systems, a part of the Tata Group, is venturing into the development of high-voltage electric vehicle (EV) components targeting global markets. The company is working on components ranging from 300V to 850V and is investing in research and development, plant facilities, and machinery to support this initiative. Tata AutoComp Systems aims to cater to the demand for high-performance EVs in overseas markets such as Europe and America. Ravi Chidambar, CEO of Tata AutoComp Systems, highlighted the significant opportunity for high-voltage EV components, emphasizing the need for calibration of various components like electric compressors, traction motors, and battery packs for the high-voltage play. Chidambar sees potential in the electric bus category in India for high-voltage powertrains.

While acknowledging that India may not witness extensive adoption of high-voltage powertrains in the two- or three-wheeler segments, Chidambar emphasized the country’s opportunity to become a global hub for EV component supply. He mentioned the importance of adopting technology and being agile to achieve scale in the global market. Despite acknowledging China’s lead in EV technology, Chidambar emphasized the need for India to play catch-up in a smart way.

Tata AutoComp Systems recently achieved a production milestone by selling 100,000 EV traction motors in partnership with Prestolite Electric within 47 months of their joint venture. Chidambar highlighted the company’s frugal approach, starting with low localization levels and plant capacities, gradually scaling them, and now aiming to produce 100,000 motors in the next financial year. Tata AutoComp Systems offers a range of EV components, including motors, controllers, integrated drivetrains, battery packs, battery management systems, cooling systems, compressors, radiators, and EV chargers.

Tata AutoComp Systems is strategically positioning itself in the high-voltage EV component market to meet the global demand for electric passenger vehicles, emphasizing both sustainability and profitability.
